18: Vernellia Randall: Racial Discrimination & Peri-Natal Outcomes

Vernellia Randall on Addressing the Black Maternal Health Mortality: The Impact of Slavery, Segregation and Racism on the Health of Black Mothers and Children

Professor Emerita Vernellia Randall has extensively and internationally addressed the flashpoints between race, racism, gender, women, and health care. As a world-renowned expert in the discussion of racism, health care and the law, she'll be bringing us her vast insights on the disparities of healthcare because of racial discrimination, and the impact this has on perinatal outcomes for marginalized populations.

About Professor Randall:

Beginning her career as a nurse, she provided public health services and administrated a statewide health program for more than 15 years. When her focus sharpened on eliminating disparities in health care for minorities and the poor, she pursued law. After working in a law firm specializing in health care law, she began teaching full time at the University of Dayton in 1990.

Professor Randall served as consultant to the Clinton Administration advisory committee on health care reform, and as grant reviewer for the National Institute of Health. She received the Ohio's Minority Health Chairman’s Award, and was named one of the “Top 10 Most Influential African-Americans” in the Black Equal Opportunity Employment Journal. She has authored many publications, including Dying While Black (2006) and Race and Racism in American Law (1997).
